Hot wallet or cold wallet: which do you actually need?
A hot wallet is connected, a cold wallet is not. The real question is how much you hold and how often you move it — here is how to decide.
The difference is simple: a hot wallet's keys sit on a device that is online, and a cold wallet's keys never touch the internet. Everything else people argue about follows from that one fact.
What hot actually means
Phone apps, browser extensions, exchange balances and web wallets are all hot. Being online is what makes them convenient: you can send in seconds from anywhere.
It is also the whole risk. Malware on the device, a malicious extension, or a phishing site that captures your details all reach a hot wallet because the keys are somewhere a program can get at them.
What cold actually means
A hardware wallet, or a seed phrase written on paper and locked away. The keys exist in a place no network reaches. To spend, you physically approve the transaction on the device.
That removes the entire category of remote attacks. It replaces them with physical ones: losing the device, losing the paper, or someone finding it.
How to decide, in one question
Ask how much you would be upset to lose, and how often you need to touch it.
Money you are actively spending, trading or topping up belongs somewhere hot, because the convenience is the point and the amount is small enough that the risk is tolerable.
Money you intend not to touch for months belongs cold. Paying for a hardware wallet is cheap insurance against a category of loss that otherwise never goes away.
Most people who hold a meaningful amount end up with both: a small working balance that is easy to move, and the rest offline. That is not indecision, it is the correct answer.
Where BYCRYPTO sits
BYCRYPTO is a custodial balance, which is hot by definition — it is online and reachable. It is built for the working-balance job: topping up, sending, and seeing what you hold.
It is not the right home for savings you plan to leave untouched for a year. For that, withdraw to a hardware wallet you control. Saying otherwise would be selling you something rather than telling you the truth.
